METROPOLIS

Metropolis

ancient Greek cities (polises) that had colonies. The metropolis had no power over the colonies, although it patronized them and played the role of an arbiter in their disputes. During the era of colonial conquests, the term "metropolis" began to be applied to states that own colonies (usually overseas). The political and legal forms of relations between the metropolis and the colonies can be different (protectorate, vassalage, ward territory, etc.), but in essence it is always relations of domination, subordination and exploitation of these territories by the metropolis.
