Dear Colleagues!

The joint scientific forum, including the International Scientific Conference on Bioorganic Chemistry "XII Readings in Memory of Academician Yuri Anatolyevich Ovchinnikov" and the VIII Russian Symposium "Proteins and Peptides" with a competition for young scientists, was held at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences from September 18 to 22, 2017. In the forum organized by the IBCh RAS together with the Russian Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists, with the support of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Russian fund fundamental research, attended by about 700 scientists from Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan and more than 40 foreign speakers - world famous scientists in the field of bioorganic chemistry, molecular biology and biotechnology, including Nobel Prize winners Aaron Ciechanover(report "The ubiquitinylation system: from fundamental mechanisms to pathogenesis and targeted drugs »), Thomas Sudhof(report "To the molecular principles of neural circuits And Arieh Warshel(report "Fundamentals of enzymatic activity »).

Acting lectures were also delivered by Professor of the University of Sheffield Michael Blackburn(How do enzymes catalyze the fomphoryl residue? The paradox is solved!) and Professor Joseph Schlessinger from Yale University (Molecular basis of endocrine fibroblast growth factors reveal new links between metabolic disorders, liver cancer and new therapeutic approaches).

In addition to assembly lectures, the forum included 17 PLENARY LECTURES AND 3 PLENARY REPORTS read by IBCh RAS staff and forum guests:V.V. Vlasov , A.G. Gabibov, P.G. Georgiev, V.V. Govorun, S.M. Deev , O.A. Dontsova, Moncef Zouali, Patrick Masson, K.S. Mineev(instead of A.S. Arsenyev), IN. Popov, Amelia P. Rauter, A.V. Semyanov , Yuri Sykulev, Elias Toubi, Alain Friboulet, Martin Herrmann and IN AND. Tsetlin , A.A. Belogurov, A.A. Vasilevsky And Andrey Reshetnyak.

Worked on the forum 5 SECTIONS, where 164 reports were heard, including:

On the second day of the forum, the SESSION Ion channels and receptors nervous system: structure, physiology and diseases”, which was organized by Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.I. Tsetlin, inviting the world's leading scientists working in this field to speak. Victor Ionovich emphasized that in last years A large flow of work is associated with cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies, structures with agonist-antagonists appear, and new opportunities for drug development open up. By the way, as it became known after the forum, the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded precisely for the development of cryoelectron microscopy. One of the most striking reports was the report of Professor P.D. Brezhestovsky - the largest world leader in the field of receptors, who spoke about connectomics, optosensorics, optogenetics and others modern techniques such as using light to stain different areas of the brain.

Other SESSION- "Bioengineering of Plants" - was held under the guidance of Sh.I. Salikhov, who for many years headed the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. The Chairman noted high level holding the session and emphasized that, in his opinion, the purpose of the forum is to identify competitive works and the best research.

The organizing committee of the forum gave young scientists, leaders of the IBCh RAS areas, also to speak to the forum participants, organizing a plenary SESSION"Today and tomorrow IBCh". Its speakers were: K.A. Lukyanov, I.V. Smirnov, I.A. Fesenko, D.M. Chudakov, I.V. Shelukhin and I.V. Yampolsky.

Within the framework of the Forum, COMPETITION OF YOUNG SCIENTISTS aimed at encouraging creative activity in scientific research. The competition was attended by 130 young scientists under the age of 35 who are engaged in research in the field of bioorganic chemistry, molecular biology and biotechnology. Scientists presented poster presentations, which were evaluated by an expert commission and, as a result, 20 the best works presented on the final day of the forum in the form of oral presentations.

Alexander Gopanenko, junior researcher at the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk) won the first place in the younger age group of the competition for his report “Human eL29 ribosomal protein - a regulator of mRNA translation of genes involved in specific cellular cascades”.

The first place in the competition among candidates and doctors of science was taken by Stanislav Terekhov, a researcher at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who made a presentation "Using ultra-high-throughput screening to select new biocatalysts and antibiotics from combinatorial libraries and natural biodiversity of microorganisms."

Within the framework of the forum, two SATELLITE SYMPOSIUM: "Evolution of technologies for studying the proteome" from the Helicon Company and the company "Bio-Rad Laboratories" and "Sources of synchrotron radiation and XFEL as methods of complex structural biology" from the company "SyncFELmed". In addition, sponsoring firms - Diaem, GalaChem and Merck - held their MASTER CLASSES for participants who, according to the organizers of the forum, were held at a decent level and attracted a large and interested audience.

The organizers did not limit themselves to the audience of those present at the forum: plenary lectures and reports were recorded and, as soon as consent is received from the speakers, they are posted on the Internet. Assembly lectures of all three are already available for listening. Nobel laureates. In the near future, other plenary lectures and reports by leading scientists from the world and Russia who took part in the forum will be posted online. Brilliant performances will be available to the widest range of specialists.
