Institute world history RAS is the leading research institution within the Russian Academy of Sciences, engaged in the study world history. The Institute was established in October 1968. Prior to that, in 1934-1968, work on world history was carried out as part of the unified Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

More than 200 people work at IVI RAS, including 6 academicians of the RAS, 4 corresponding members of the RAS, more than 180 doctors and candidates of sciences.

Main areas of research:

  • modern models of the historical process;
  • problems of interdisciplinary dialogue;
  • historical and cultural anthropology;
  • collective memory and historical consciousness;
  • history of religion and church;
  • formation and development of civil society.

The focus is traditionally on the history of Western and of Eastern Europe and selected European regions, Northern and Latin America, African countries. Separate areas of research formed at the Institute in the early 2000s are Russia in world history, the history of the CIS countries. The Institute pays special attention to the problems of interaction and mutual perception of cultures and societies in the world historical process.

One of the key areas of the Institute's work is the integration of science and education. In 2003 on the basis of IVI RAS and the Faculty of History State University humanities The Scientific and Educational Center for History was established. The Institute actively cooperates with leading research and educational centers in Russia and abroad.

The priority areas of research at the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences are: theoretical and methodological problems of studying world history; global studies; comparative study of ancient and medieval civilizations; history of the 20th century; history of European countries, USA, countries of Africa and Latin America; Russia in world history; history of the post-Soviet space; history of religion and church; special historical disciplines.
