The Russian State Archive of the Navy (RGAVMF) is a federal archive that stores documents of the Navy from the end of the 17th century. to 1940. In contrast to the documents of the army, which are stored in three archives (the pre-revolutionary period - RGVIA, 1918 - 1940 - RGVA, after 1941 - TsAMO), the documents of the fleet are stored in two: RGAVMF until 1940. and the Central Naval Archive of the Ministry of Defense in Gatchina Leningrad region- after 1941. True, in the RGAVMF, documents of the pre-revolutionary and Soviet times are currently located in different buildings (the Soviet period - on Millionnaya Street, pre-revolutionary - on Silver Boulevard).

The archive was created in 1724 at the Admiralty College. In 1827 it was transformed into the Archive of the Naval Ministry, in August 1917 it was renamed into the Central Archive of the Fleet and the Naval Department. In 1918 it became part of the Unified State Archival Fund, from 1922 to 1925 it existed as part of the Leningrad branch Central Archive RSFSR, and from 1925 to 1934. - as the Leningrad branch of the Central Historical Archive.

The archive became an independent institution in 1934, when it received the name Marine historical archive. Since 1941, it received the status of a central state archive and became known as the Central State Archive of the Navy (TsGAVMF). In 1992, it was renamed the Russian State Archive of the Navy (RGAVMF).

In genealogical research on the pre-revolutionary period, the materials of the RGAVMF are involved in the study of the biographies of fleet officers and officials of the maritime department. As a rule, there is no information on the lower ranks in the documents of the archive, however, if the exact place of service is known, then, of course, it is necessary to check the relevant funds.

The RGAVMF has several collections that contain information about the officers of the Russian fleet:

  • Service and official lists of officials of the maritime department (f. 406) - the fund contains official lists of officers (most of the materials are from the 19th - early 20th centuries), as well as civil, medical ranks and naval clergy. In addition, the fund contains service records of the sailors of the Estonian Navy (1924-1940).
  • Attestations for the personnel of the fleet (f. 873) - a collection of documents from the 50s. XIX - early XX centuries, containing the characteristics of officers and officials of the fleet
  • Patents for ranks, orders, edged weapons (f. 226)
  • The highest orders for the fleet on the ranks of military and civilian (f. 248)
  • Watch and watch magazines (f. 870)

In the next article, I will continue the story about the funds of the RGAVMF for the pre-revolutionary period, and also describe the funds of the Soviet period.
