Air masses due to the difference in atmospheric pressure constantly moving, pushing each other. The change of one air mass by another in any territory causes changes in the weather (Fig. 107).
How to study and predict the weather. In most countries of the world there are special weather services. They are engaged in its study and prediction, i.e. forecast. Russian service weather service was established in 1872. The basis of the weather service of all countries is an extensive network of meteorological stations (from the Greek "meteora" - atmospheric phenomena). There are about 20 thousand such stations all over the world. They are equipped with instruments for studying the elements of the weather. Readings of all instruments are taken eight times a day at meteorological stations. Information about temperature, humidity, pressure, winds and other weather elements is transmitted to meteorological centers. There, the received data is put on maps with special signs. These maps are called weather maps or synoptic maps (Fig. 108).

For example, a weather forecast for aviation includes data on cloud base and thickness, visibility, fog, wind at high altitudes.
The central body of the weather service in our country is the Hydrometeorological Center in Moscow. It is one of the three world centers of the World Weather Watch.
