Mirgorod is not only a resort town, and not only Gogol's birthplace...
Few of the thousands of vacationers in the resort town of Mirgorod realize that it is here that the most powerful fighter aviation regiment of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is based, armed with Su-27 aircraft. On November 27, 1941, the 831st Fighter Aviation Regiment was formed in the city of Krasnovodsk, Turkmenistan, on the basis of an air defense aviation squadron.
Then the sky grew dim from explosions and the earth trembled, tormented by caterpillars of enemy tanks. On November 11, 1941, the recruitment of personnel and equipment began in the city of Krasnovodsk. Since January 8, 1942, having become part of the 4th mixed aviation division of the 4th Shock Army, the personnel began sorties on the Kalinin Front.

During the first two months of hostilities, pilots flew 123 sorties, 13 of them were night missions, 13 air battles were conducted, 8 enemy aircraft were shot down, 22 vehicles, 112 carts, two locomotives and other equipment were destroyed by assault actions. And this was only the beginning of an exhausting road to the Great Victory, strewn with the graves of fellow soldiers. Ahead were Southwestern and 3rd Ukrainian fronts, fighting in the Kharkov direction, participation in Battle of Stalingrad. Having traveled a difficult military path from the Volga to Ukraine and Moldova, the regiment took part in the liberation of Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Hungary and Austria from the fascist invasion. During the years of the Great Patriotic War, 9960 sorties were carried out, 531 air battles were carried out, 417 aircraft were shot down and a lot of enemy equipment and manpower were destroyed.

Citing these statistics of combat activity, it is impossible not to dwell on examples of the heroism of personnel. Here are just a few of them. Lieutenant Colonel V. Smeshkov carried out 164 sorties during the day and 22 at night, conducted 45 air battles, shot down 9 personally and as part of a group of 3 enemy aircraft. Awarded with orders Lenin and Alexander Nevsky, three Orders of the Red Banner, the Yugoslav Order of the "Partisan Star", the medal "For Military Merit". Hero Soviet Union Captain I. Pavlovsky conducted 379 sorties, took part in 97 air battles, shot down 20 personally and as part of a group of 10 enemy aircraft. He was awarded three orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, the Red Star, the Order of the Patriotic War and the Yugoslav Order of the Partisan Star. Hero of the Soviet Union Captain A. Frolov carried out 435 sorties, 204 of which were air reconnaissance, took part in 60 air battles. They personally shot down 14 and as part of a group of 8 enemy aircraft.

The heroic feat was carried out by Lieutenant Pyotr Dymchenko. On November 10, 1942, in one of the sorties, paired with Captain A. Frolov, he shot down an enemy bomber. Left alone (Frolov was shot down), he shot down another bomber, and then entered into battle with 15 Messerschmidt-109 fighters, of which he shot down three and knocked out one. But in this unequal battle, he died, preventing the enemy from crossing the Don River.

For the courage and heroism of the personnel, shown in the performance of command assignments during the liberation of the cities of Galati and Izmail, the regiment was given the honorary name "Galatsky". In the post-war period, the personnel of the unit mastered such types aviation technology, like: MiG-15, MiG-17 and MiG-21, Su-27 aircraft.

Since 1977, the regiment has been permanently based at the airfield in the city of Mirgorod. Mirgorodshchina became for many years a land that, with the warmth of human souls, the richness of the land, inspires military aviators for military everyday life to protect the airspace of Ukraine. To a large extent, the basing of the regiment contributed to the fact that many Mirgorod residents chose the profession of a military aviator and today serve in this aviation unit.

On January 13, 1992, the regiment took an oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people. As part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the unit has always been one of the most combat-ready units of the Air Force, and then the Air Force of Ukraine. This became possible thanks to the professional leadership of such commanders as Colonel Alexander Fedorovich Pelevin, Major General Alexander Ivanovich Titarenko, Colonels Nikolai Ivanovich Kashuba, Vasily Viktorovich Mishko, Leonid Ivanovich Rezchikov, Vladimir Grigorievich Lenets.

The personnel of the unit represented the Air Force of Ukraine in many countries of the world. The aviation garrison was repeatedly visited by foreign military delegations. In 1998, the crew of the Su-27UB aircraft, headed by Colonel Ivan Chernenko a transatlantic flight was made to the United States of America at the Seymour-Jones air base. Military aviators took part in international air shows on the airfields of European countries, demonstrating their skills, asserting the authority of independent Ukraine. At the seventh international aviation show SIAD-2004 (Slovak International Air Display) the demonstration flight of Lieutenant Colonel Fyodor Tishchuk on a Su-27 fighter was recognized as the best individual air show.

Today, the aviation brigade, which became the successor of the illustrious regiment, lives on a busy schedule of combat training. Aircrew persistently improve their habits and master new techniques and methods of tactical actions. One of the main tasks now facing the aviators of the brigade is to be ready to protect the air borders of Ukraine.

Important tasks are performed by civilian workers of the unit, who have taken on a large burden of social and domestic problems. Many of them have been working for decades, setting an example for the younger generation of the aviation brigade. It is difficult to single out someone specifically from the large and friendly team of the unit, because in the 831st Galatskaya Fighter Aviation Brigade of the Order of the Red Banner and Kutuzov of the III degree, everyone is really professionals in their field, although they are not showered with “paradise apples” today. The flight personnel, specialists from the engineering and technical service, communications, logistics, management and headquarters of the aviation brigade are making every effort to replenish the history of the brigade with new, bright pages from examples of worthy performance of military duty.

Mirgorod airfield
The military airfield in Mirgorod began to be built in 1953 and completed three years later. Previously, Tu-16 and MIG-21 aircraft were based on it. The 831st Galatsky Fighter Aviation Regiment was located, which in 2003 was turned into a flight brigade. In 1985, Su-27 fighters were transferred to Mirgorod. These are one of the most powerful military aircraft in Ukraine.

About 500 pilots with their families live in the military town of Mirgorod. The city also hosts a military communications unit.

Most of the training flights in Mirgorod take place in May-June, when the Kharkov Academy of the Armed Forces sends for flight practice.

memory of the namesake (Chernenko from Mirgorod)

..Somewhere in a foreign land, another restless conqueror of heights is training youth van Chernenko, who flew not only domestic equipment, but also the American F-15, whose flight once visited Mirgorod.

*** Colonel Ivan Chernenko spoke in many countries, who in 1998, for the first time in the history of the Ukrainian Air Force, on a Su-27 fighter, accompanied by an Il-76MD military transport aircraft, made a transatlantic flight from Ukraine to the United States of America and became the owner of a crystal mace of the All-Ukrainian competition "Golden fortune". In Bratislava in 1997, he had to fly at the very end, when it was overcast with a lower edge of 1000m. Amy and the Germans finally did not rise into the air. Ivan never caught the clouds and managed to make a bell, hitting one single hole..... In 1999, Ivan Chernenko received an award for his performance in the Czech city of Hradec Kralove at an air show. In 2000, Ukrainian Air Force delegations took part in international aviation exhibitions in Romania, Austria, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, and the Republic of Moldova, where they also received awards.
And yesterday friends from Ukraine called ... Ivan Chernenko died in Angola ... and not in the air, but on a hunt ... rolled over in a jeep ... now ... go through an Afghan, actually become the best pilot in the world, and now so die...
