4. How developed are our memory, attention, ability to work with information?

Let's try to solve the problem of remembering dates

We proceed from the fact that the dates still have to be taught, since they won’t let us write off, you can hope for luck with a random choice of an answer on testing, but it’s better to do at least something to help yourself.

Our first step: we determine the list of dates of events that we have to learn. For example, when preparing for the External Independent Evaluation (EIA) on the history of Ukraine, the list required dates indicated in the training program.

Our second step: set how much time is left until the test day.

Third step: determine how much information you need to learn in one day.

Fourth step: draw up a work schedule. At the same time, we allocate three to four days for study (if we have them), the next day is a repetition of what has been learned. Then again study and a new repetition of everything studied. And so on, while there is a reserve of time.

We decided on what needs to be done to start working on the dates of the events, now let's try to figure out how to act.

Based on my experience, I believe that the most effective ways works on dates are:

How to work with training

You need to say the date of the event, and then click on the arrow opposite the event - the date of this event will appear. Or write down the dates of all events of this topic, and then, by clicking on the button "Vіdpovid", get the right answers.

If you got the date right - check the next date, if a mistake is made — we are working on an event, the date of which we named incorrectly. Ways of work are determined depending on your abilities and skills. It is enough for someone to simply see the correct answer and fix it in their memory, someone needs to make considerable efforts.

If you have any difficulties, I recommend:
Firstly, clearly read the name of the event and its date aloud;
Secondly, write the event on the card, again saying the name of the event, and write the date on the back of the card and say it. Next, we work with the card, as it is written
Third, after working out other dates of the topic, you need to reset the answers. To do this, go to the previous slide, then return to the slide of the topic with which we have already worked, and again speak or write down the dates of the events, and then check your answer. If necessary, we repeat the cycle of work.
Fourth, after three or four days, it is imperative to allocate time for repetition, and if there is a reserve of time, conduct several checks, increasing the time interval between checks.

Of course, this section does not cover all areas of application of those methods and techniques of effective memorization that you learned about above, it is simply impossible to cover everything. But I think it will not be difficult for you (especially after reading this section) to come up with a knowledge of the techniques and options for combining them, a specific way to memorize the material you need that is not included in this book.

> Remembering historical dates

First way.
Memorization of historical dates using alphanumeric code.

First of all, I hope that you know the table of pulp and paper in the same way as the multiplication table, or a little better. If this is not so, then go back to the chapter in which it is given and restore it to memory, it will be useful to us again and again. So, in order to remember the date in this way, you need to translate the numbers that make it up into words according to the CBC, and from the words make up a phrase related in some way to the remembered date.

Let me explain with examples. Let's start by remembering simple dates (those in which you only need to remember the year). In this case, we have a four-digit number, for example, 1608 is the invention of the telescope. To get started, decide for yourself whether you will remember this four-digit number as two two-digit numbers or as one three-digit number (the millennium designation is the number " 1 "- in this case can be discarded, since it is clear that this invention occurred in our millennium).

If you settled on the first option, then you need to come up with two words corresponding to the numbers 16 and 08. Thus, in the first word, the first consonant should be " G" or " AND", and the second - " W" or " L" (see alphanumeric code). The remaining consonants in the word, if any, do not matter in this case. You must firmly remember that only the first two consonants of the keywords are involved in the "game", this is important so as not to confuse anything when playing. These requirements are satisfied by the words "goal", "golf", "swindler", "eye", "yolk", "jackdaw", "galaxy", "traffic cop" and many others. In the second word, the first consonant should be " M" or " H", and second " IN" or " F". It is easy to pick up the words "news", "net", "mafia", "coupling", "dung", etc.

Now we are compiling a small plot of three words: two key words and any third one directly related to the date, in this case, of course, this is the word "telescope". Of course, the plot, if possible, should be fun, unusual, one that is easy to remember. It is better to choose words for date conversion that are visual, evocative of vivid images and avoid abstract concepts and verbs. For the chosen date - the year of the invention of the telescope - I would dwell on the plot: "They watched the space mafia play golf through the telescope."

Or like this: "Mafia crook stole a newly invented telescope." Or on this: "The traffic cop pulled out a telescope with a net." Of course, after you pick up the words and make up the plot, you should not regret a few more seconds in order to "revive" it, try to present it as vividly as possible. As you know, this simple operation contributes to a much longer storage of the plot in memory.

If you choose to remember the date as three-digit number, then it will be enough to come up with only one word for memorizing it, in which the first three consonants will correspond to the numbers of the remembered date. In the future, you will need to combine this word into a plot with any word directly related to the date (event). However, firstly, if you decide to use this method, then you will need to firmly remember that three, and not two, consonants are significant in the selected word. Secondly, as you know, it is rather difficult to find the right words for some three-digit numbers, for example, for the number 771 or 891, and a lot of time is spent searching for such a word, often the found word is not bright enough.

And yet this method has a great advantage - the brevity of the plot, so it is often tempting to use it. Personally, I do the following. First, I set myself the task of choosing a "three-digit" word, but if within 15-30 seconds (!), A bright word that meets the requirements does not come to mind, then I turn to memorizing the date with the help of two auxiliary words or (more often) remember historical date by any other method, which I advise you.

Let's go back to the example of the invention of the telescope. number 608 correspond to the alphanumeric code of the word "lymph", "skimmer". It is certainly not the most bright words, but they are quite suitable for plotting. For example: "Through a telescope they examined the lymph of other planets" or "Through the holes of a skimmer you can look like through a telescope." Another option for remembering the date as a three-digit number.

When applying this method, you will need two keywords corresponding to the date, just as in the first case. However, it is often really not necessary to memorize the first digit, and, accordingly, the first of the keywords can be specially used each time instead of inventing always with the same words corresponding in the verbal-numeric list to the first ten single-digit numbers.

Let me remind you that in these words there is only one consonant letter and it corresponds to numbers (from 0 before 9 ) according to the CBC. Note these words: 1 - hedgehog (already, yogi), 2 - poison (iodine), 3 - ear (ear, yak), 4 - cabbage soup, 5 - boa (wallpaper), 6 - neck (spruce), 7 - mustache (wasp), 8 - Eve (Java), 9 - aria (paradise, swarm), 0 - Noah, frost. As you may have guessed, these words included in the plot will mean ordinal number of the century. For example, to remember the same date of invention of the telescope, we make up a plot from the words: telescope, neck (spruce) and any word corresponding to the number 08 (see above). "A mafioso hit the neck with a telescope" or "Through the telescope I saw a mafioso sleeping under a spruce tree."

Let me remind you that the words corresponding to the number denoting the century must be memorized as well as the multiplication table, so as not to waste time remembering (although those of you who use a verbal-numeric list of 100 words for memorization will probably remember the first ten ). So, in order to apply this method, you will need to come up with only one ("two-digit") word for the last two digits of the date.

Well, and, perhaps, the last (and, in my opinion, the least successful) method of remembering historical dates, based on knowledge of the alphanumeric code, is that you can come up with a word for each digit of the date. These words must begin with the letters corresponding to these figures according to the Pulp and Paper. These words, as usual, need to be combined into a plot.

For example, in order to remember the date of the invention of the telescope, you need to come up with three words that begin respectively with the letters "W"("l"), "M" ("n"), "B" ("f") and consistently combine them into a plot along with the word "telescope". One of the biggest disadvantages of this method is that there are so many words that satisfy the requirement to start with a certain letter that it is difficult to choose, and it takes a lot of time to make the final choice. But if for some reason the words are found immediately (for example, you notice that the letters are a well-known abbreviation, initials or slogan), and the phrase is also born quickly, then this method is also very effective.

Please note that when using any of the methods described above for remembering historical dates, you can include any other information related to the date in the plot. For example, remembering the date of the invention of the telescope, you can include the author of the invention, namely Galileo, in the plot. In this case, the plot will take the following form: "Galileo hit the mafia with a telescope on the neck."

If you find it difficult to remember the fact that it was Galileo who invented the telescope and are afraid that you may confuse him with Copernicus, for example, then take a look at the chapter on how to remember famous people and what they are famous for. (I note that in this case, by chance, for the first two digits of the date - 1 And 6 according to the CBC, the surname Galileo itself is suitable, which means that the plot can be like this: "Galileo caught a telescope with a net."

Consider a few more detailed examples remembering historical dates using alphanumeric code. 1791 year - The Louvre was opened as an art museum (before that it was a royal palace). I will remember only three numbers, since it is clear that this happened in Our Millennium. I sign the letters corresponding to them according to the pulp and paper under the numbers and try to make a word out of them. I easily got one word for all three numbers. I will repeat once again, but it seems to me that this option of remembering historical dates using the pulp and paper mill is the most successful of all. I'll say more. If you decide to seriously study historical dates, I would advise you to conditionally divide all dates into two groups: those for which you managed to find one word for three digits (believe my experience, they will be the majority) and those where you were forced to apply a different method .

For example, I will remember the following date, recoding the numbers into words with only one significant consonant - the first letter of the words: 1866 year - the Moscow Conservatory was opened. The first word must start with " IN" or " F", and the other two with " W" or " L"(we don’t remember the unit). When compiling the plot, we try to use as few extra words as possible (in this type of application of the pulp and paper mill, this is especially important!). Plot: "The Moscow Conservatory is the Great and Best of the Best." (When using this type of method, it is better to compose plots similar to slogans, statements, rules, etc., they are remembered best.)

Practice for yourself and you will understand that it is much easier to memorize historical dates with the help of a pulp and paper mill and compiling a plot than to memorize them mechanically. Don't forget to use the method of animation and co-feeling after you've plotted. The next day, try to remember the dates you remember the day before. If difficulties arise, repeat them again, work out the plots better, bring your emotional attitude to them into them, place emphasis on key words, etc.

In this case, repetition will be rational and beneficial. Repeat stories, not numbers, as if you were trying to memorize text related to a date. You can restore the numbers at any time by recoding them from words using the CBC. As a rule, dates memorized only by repetition or even cramming are stored in memory for only a short time (before the exam) or while you are interested or need them, and if you stop referring to them, they are safely forgotten.

Surely at school you memorized the years of the life of Dostoevsky or Nekrasov, but now you can hardly remember them (unless, of course, their work was the topic of your diploma or dissertation). After all, you have nothing to cling to. By contrast, dates learned by plotting and rationally repeating them (if necessary) will stay in your memory for much longer, regardless of whether you refer to them often.

Before I give you plenty of practice in memorizing historical dates using the method described above, I will say a few more words about such a variety of historical dates as life dates of famous people. The principle of operation is the same here. First, use the CBC to compose keywords for remembering the date of life and, if necessary, the date of death. Then, in order to remember that these are the dates of the life of this particular person, depending on your knowledge of his work or merits (or appearance), you can act in two different ways.

If the person is familiar to you, then you have enough associations to associate keywords with a particular person. If the remembered person is not familiar to you, you have little idea who it is about, or you are afraid to confuse it with someone else, then it makes sense to include a sound association for the surname in the plot in order to know who exactly these or those years of life belong to ( or other digital information).

So, for example, the musician in the above example with the composer Glinka does not need an association for a surname at all, he will determine whose years of life these are from the works included in the plot or (if the dates of their creation are not included) he will associate key words with the appearance of a person, compose a plot with using any of the author's characters, any detail known to him.

For a person who is far from music, but who for some reason needs to memorize the years of life, for example, Glinka and Mussorgsky (and who does not see a big difference between them), it is better to connect their years of life with sound associations to their surnames, so that in the future do not confuse. But if we memorized the dates of Newton's life, then we would not have to come up with an association to his surname at all: after all, it is enough to mention an apple falling on his head, and it is already clear that these are the dates of the life of this particular scientist.

The second way.
Graphical method for remembering historical dates

This method consists in drawing the date. As you remember, numbers in shape can resemble various objects. On the other hand, if you show imagination and ingenuity, then in almost any subject you can find the required number by changing it in one way or another, as a result, for each number you can find many more images in the world around us than it seems at first glance. When memorizing historical dates, it is advisable to look for objects similar to numbers, as it were, in the subject, in the event that the date describes.

In other words, imagine that you need to draw a postcard depicting the contents of a date, but draw it in such a way that you can easily see the numbers corresponding to the date in this postcard. Of course, it is better if the picture is drawn with humor. The numbers encoded in the figure must be placed from left to right or from top to bottom (so as not to confuse their sequence in the future).

In order to later reproduce the date, you just need to remember the drawing that you came up with for it. Unlike numbers, which, as you know, are abstract material, remembering a picture, and even more so the one you drew yourself, is much easier.

Consider an example: 1586 year - the Tsar Cannon was cast. I will remember only the last three digits, since I will not confuse the millennium. I draw a gun so that it resembles a figure in shape " 5 ". On a digit " 8 "two nuclei lying side by side may be similar. And the figure" 6 "- this is a pot-bellied king, running away from her in fear.

Number " 6 "I always associate with a pot-bellied man, and I also introduced the king into my drawing in order to remember that this is the Tsar Cannon, and not some other, and the date refers specifically to it, and not to any - some battle. Artistic abilities for using this method of remembering historical dates are completely unimportant, just as real similarity, say, cannons and numbers, is not so important " 5 ".

The main thing is that it is you who sees this similarity and, when remembering the picture, correctly reproduces the figure. This method is convenient to use, first of all, when there are not very many numbers to remember, and the topic with which the date is associated can become the topic of the drawing. Sometimes it is even easier to remember the date in this way than using an alphanumeric code.

Because, as you probably noticed, the plot when using the pulp and paper mill sometimes turns out to be quite clumsy, and the words do not fit with each other in any way. In each specific case, the choice of method is yours, the result in any case will be better than with memorization, and most importantly, you save time. Consider some more examples of remembering historical dates using the graphical method.

1807 year - the first steamship was built. First, I drew a figure eight and thought about what it might look like with a steamer. It occurred to me that these could be two pipes standing side by side, when viewed from above. I followed this path, that is, I began to look at the ship from above. The image for zero was immediately found - this is the hull of the steamer (when viewed from above). Undoubtedly, memorization will be more effective if you apply the methods of animation and co-sensation in relation to the finished drawing. For example, you can imagine how you touch the Tsar Cannon, feel the roughness of its surface, the temperature of the metal. Imagine that you are trying to lift the cannonballs, feel their heaviness, take a closer look at the face of the king. In the second case, you can imagine that you really fly over this ship, see people on it, hear how it trumpets, or the music that comes from it, or the cry of seagulls, feel the spray of waves, the smell of water.

1669 year - the Grand Opera, the famous opera house in Paris, was opened. The choice of the theme of the picture depends on what you associate with the theme of a memorable date. For me, for example, the opera house is associated with an opera singer. Therefore, to remember this date, I draw an opera singer preparing for a performance. The two sixes are the curls of her wig, and the number " 9 "is a mirror with a handle in which she looks.

To remember that this is the Paris Opera House, I draw a window from which the Eiffel Tower (the symbol of Paris) is visible. Another variant of the drawing for remembering the same date could be a picture of a theater scene. Two sixes are orchestra players, and nine is a bowing performer. In the background, again, some symbol of Paris can be depicted.

So, you can draw whatever you want. The main thing is that your drawing can remind you of the date you are studying. By the way, sometimes, when it is necessary to remember a date that was memorized using the graphic method, people do not remember the final drawing, but the process of inventing or executing it, that is, they remember their work on the material (here, motor memory is also connected to remembering).

But this method is simply indispensable for remembering the dates of writing famous paintings.

Unlike the previous method, here you do not need to invent anything, fantasize. We must begin to carefully examine the illustration (picture, photograph) and sequentially find the numbers of the remembered date in it. Illustrations for dates are very common in textbooks and history books. Of course, the search must be carried out strictly from left to right and from top to bottom, so as not to confuse anything later. The whole difficulty lies in the fact that the items are already given and cannot be changed.

Therefore, it is often necessary to use the similarity with the figure of only one part of the object. Now let's assume that you have found successively all the numbers you are interested in. What now needs to be done so as not to forget them? Well, firstly, we need to dwell on them in more detail, mentally, as it were, outline their contour of the numbers found (sometimes it is possible to actually circle them). Often this is already enough to remember the historical date for which the illustration is given (or the date of the painting, the creation of the sculptural group).

All the rest of the work is done by your natural memory without any mnemonic means whatsoever. And when you remember an illustration (picture), you can easily remember the date related to it. Try to remember a couple of dates in this way. If your natural memory was not enough, help it by creating a small mnemonic plot from the key moments of the picture (that is, those parts of it in which the numbers are encoded). Train yourself. Try to remember the years of creation of 8-10 paintings, reproductions of which you have at home, or 8-10 historical dates, for which illustrations are given in the textbook.

Combined method of remembering historical dates

The three methods of remembering historical dates described above can be combined to achieve even better results. For example, you can in the existing illustration (third method) "place" keywords for the date created using the CBC. They can actually be drawn into a picture or imagined mentally. Another option is to combine the second and third methods.

That is, in an illustration for a memorable date, you can draw objects similar in shape to numbers. Sometimes, if time permits, you can try to remember the date using both the graphical method and the pulp and paper method. In a word, the more creativity and fantasy you show when remembering dates - the better the result will be. Your memory will thank you for helping yourself. And her gratitude in the first place will be in the strength of storing the information you need.
