CCNA courses - what do they give?

CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Assotiate) Routing and Switching is one of the most sought-after certifications in the Cisco certification system, important both in itself and as an entry point into the industry. If you plan to work with network technologies, you will almost certainly have to get it, because it is it that gives you access to more high levels certification required to advance in this area. Thus, Cisco CCNA courses provide both the skills necessary to work with networks and lay a solid foundation for further career building in this area.

To pass the corresponding certification exam, you must complete either the "Use of Network Equipment" in two parts (CS-ICND I and II), or the accelerated program (CS-CCNAX).

Other Cisco Learning Paths

One of key features Cisco courses is that they are not limited to the skills of working with specific models equipment, but to a large extent devoted to more fundamental issues (algorithms, standards, protocols, etc.), which will be equally useful when using any network infrastructure and any operating systems. As a result, the training is so comprehensive that even competing vendors often list passing these programs as a prerequisite for working with their equipment.

When organizing training, we follow all the recommendations of the vendor, use original training materials provided by the developer, and classes are taught by certified trainers with many years of teaching experience.

More detailed information about each of the training programs can be found on its page, as well as the nearest start dates for classes. In addition to the face-to-face form, most of them are also available in the form of webinars.

For ease of navigation, the courses are divided into subcategories depending on the topics they cover. If you are not sure which program is necessary for your level of training, we recommend that you contact us using one of the methods indicated on the "Contacts" page - our consultants will be happy to offer you the best option for your situation.

We are often asked questions related to the procedure for passing certification exams. We tried to collect such questions in one place and prepare detailed answers to them.

Where to take exams

Cisco Written Certification exams are taken at Pearson VUE testing centers. There are such centers in almost 165 countries of the world, not excluding, of course, Russia. It is not necessary to go to Moscow - there are testing centers in many major cities(you will be prompted to select the nearest one when registering for the exam).

What exams do you need to take

Depends on the certification you choose. For example, to get CCNA Routing and Switching, you need to pass two exams: ICND1 and ICND2. After the first of these two exams, you will also receive a CCENT (Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician) certification. For other certificates, the set of exams will be different. The current list of exams required to obtain a certificate is best viewed on the Cisco Learning Network website.

How much do certification exams cost

The cost of the exam depends on its complexity and the country in which you take it. If you want to get an entry-level CCNA certificate in Russia, then each of the ICND1 and ICND2 exams will cost you 165 USD.

It is almost impossible for a person from the street to get a discount from this price.

Exceptions:

  • Employees of Cisco Partners or Large Customers who receive discounted certification exam vouchers as a bonus on hardware purchases
  • Network Academy students

Sometimes on the Internet you can find offers to buy discount vouchers, but either the savings will be a ridiculous 1-2 USD, or it will be an outright fraud. Do not use vouchers that you received directly from Cisco.

How to prepare for the exam

Exams at Cisco are not cheap, so it makes sense to take them only when you are sure that you will pass. If you are not sure, it is better to reschedule the exam to another date - it's free.

The topics covered in the exam are publicly available on the Cisco Learning Network. There is nothing super-secret or super-difficult in the exam: it is absolutely possible to prepare well and pass it.

Some technologies mentioned in exams may be quite rare in the real world. It is almost impossible to get practical experience on all exam topics in everyday work, even if you know individual topics much deeper than required. It is for this reason that we recommend that you study in the appropriate course before taking the exam: you will almost certainly hear something new for yourself. In addition, the instructor on the course will definitely tell you about some specific features of the selected exam, there will definitely be such.

For advanced courses (for example, preparing for the CCNP certification), listening to the course alone will not be enough. Candidates must demonstrate not only knowledge of the theoretical material, but also practical skills in working with equipment. so without independent work not enough.

Sign up for our exam preparation course and your instructor will help you build a self-paced study plan that includes the Official Certification Guide, labs, and recommendations additional material for studying.

How to register for the exam and pay

Signing up for the exam makes sense only after listening to the course and gaining confidence in the level of your preparation. This should not be done in advance.

The most economical way is to register directly on the Pearson VUE website, choose a convenient place and time for taking the exam, and pay for the attempt. bank card. Alternative option, which can be recommended only if there are no available slots in the testing center of your choice - call this center and book participation through them. It will be more expensive than in the first case, but sometimes there are no other options.

The next day after payment, it makes sense to call the testing center and ask to confirm that your registration is seen in the system and that no additional money will be required from you: some testing centers cheat and ask you to pay something on the spot. They do not have the right to do this, if they ask you for something, complain to Pearson VUE.

How is the exam

Before the exam, you sign a non-disclosure agreement, confirm your identity and take a photo with a webcam. It takes some time, so you need to come to the exam 10-15 minutes before its official start.

You hand over all your personal belongings to the administrator (sometimes they are put in a locker, sometimes not, so you should not bring anything valuable with you to the exam - computers, secret documents, expensive phones), after which you are escorted to the testing room. It makes sense to run to the toilet on the way there - there is not much time in the exam, the soulless machine will not pause the timer.

The administrator assigns you a machine to take the test, explains the rules of the exam to you, and then leaves you alone with the test. Ask how, if necessary, you can call him (if, for example, the system crashes - this is rare, but it happens).

Then the timer starts ticking. The time available depends on the exam (for example, ICND1 lasts 90 minutes), and if you are not taking it on your own mother tongue, then you will automatically receive an additional 30 minutes of language extension. Most likely, this will be exactly your case, since most Cisco exams are taken on English language. Moreover, even if the option to take an exam in Russian is suddenly added in the future, it is strongly not recommended to do this, because. questions and answers in such cases are often translated not very close to the text, and the meaning of the “correct” answer is lost.

The number of questions depends on the exam (for example, ICND1 will have from 45 to 55 questions, current data can be viewed on the Cisco learning Network). The questions are asked one after the other until you answer all of them or the exam time runs out. You can't go back to questions that have already been answered, you can't skip answers.

What questions are on the exam

The most common types of questions on the exam are:

  1. The choice of one option out of 4-5 offered. It is impossible to confuse this option with others, because. the correct option is selected by the radio button. The simplest type of questions.
  2. Selection of several correct options (usually they write exactly how many correct options the system expects - “choose two” or “choose three”, but sometimes there are nasty “choose all applicable”). Opposite each answer option, you can put a tick, points for the answer are counted only if all the checkboxes are ticked correctly.
  3. Symlet, or laboratory work. You are shown the interface of a device CLI simulator drawn in Flash and asked to perform certain actions. The tasks are quite simple, while taking a little more time than other types of questions, although they are assessed in the same way as other questions.

There are other options for questions, but they are quite rare. Don't be alarmed if you see a type of question you've never seen before.

How exams are graded

After the end of the exam, you will immediately see the result: passed / failed. For successful delivery you need to score a certain number of points, which depends on your particular set of questions (usually around 850). Points are awarded for completely correct answers, if you answered the question only partially - you will not receive points for it.

The minimum possible number of points is 300 (to get exactly 300 points, you need to deliberately answer all the questions incorrectly), the maximum is 1000. Accordingly, if you are offered to answer, for example, 50 questions, then each question will cost an average of 14 points. All questions, including simlets, cost about the same, their cost does not differ dramatically (relatively speaking, a question can cost 13 or 15 points, but 5 or 25 cannot).

The final score is confirmed only by the printout that you will receive after the exam at the testing center. It does not appear in the certificate obtained as a result of the exam.

  • Your worst enemy is jitters. If you are well prepared, you will pass the exam, just pull yourself together and do not do anything stupid. The questions there are simple, no one sets themselves the goal of “filling up” you.
  • Do not hurry. You cannot return to the question to which you accidentally gave the wrong answer (even if you realized that the answer was wrong exactly at the moment you clicked the “send” button). Choose the correct answer, exhale, reread the text of the question and all the answers again, then send the answer. Enough time, don't worry.
  • If you need to choose one correct option, and you consider several to be correct - choose the option that is simpler and matches the course material. In general, if something can be done in several ways, do it in the way that was described in the course, do not show off. A soulless machine will not appreciate the beauty of your alternative solution.
  • Read the text of the question and the suggested answers carefully. Twice. No, this is not a joke: meanness is often embedded in the texts of questions and answers. You can be caught on the fact that you do not notice the "typo". Or, for example, ask to choose all the wrong answers instead of all the right ones. Attention is the key to a good result.
  • If it is not possible to answer within a reasonable time - skip the hard question, especially if it is a symlet (or “laba”, as such questions are also called). Time is not rubber, and one question will not do the weather for you.
  • Search the Internet for examples of questions and answers in advance. No need to learn them by heart, the exam questions will be different! 10-15 questions will be enough to conduct a self-test of knowledge and assess how ready you are to pass.

What to do after the exam

After a few days, you will receive an email from Cisco confirming that you have passed the exam. And if all other conditions were met, then with congratulations on obtaining certification. If you want to receive a paper certificate by mail, you will need to confirm your address in your profile, a link for this will again be sent to your email.

Of course, you can think about the next step of certification or about another direction. For example, after CCNA it makes sense to take a swing at CCNP, and after it - on the provider track.

Do not forget to share your impressions about the exams with us (within the NDA, of course) - it is very important for us to receive feedback.
