Postgraduate Pedagogy distance learning. Frequently Asked Questions – Postgraduate Studies – National Research University Higher School of Economics. How to prepare a dissertation remotely

Distance learning graduate students is non-correspondence graduate school, but an original form of collaboration between a graduate student and a university. It has a number of specific features and advantages.

Training in full-time or full-time graduate school takes place in almost the same format as in the magistracy: attendance at classes, teaching, constant contact with the supervisor, there is the state budget and a free set. Extramural requires occasional personal presence. Only distance learning allows you to go through the necessary stages of work on a dissertation research in a mode that will be convenient for the future candidate and direct presence at the university is not required.

What is distance learning in graduate school

Distance learning assumes that a graduate student finds and processes a significant part of the materials on their own. This is a good way out of a situation where you need to divide your time between work, family or other obligations and writing a dissertation.

The specific program of the course for distance learning, its duration, the ratio of lecture hours and independent work will depend on the institution and the chosen specialization.

Admission

In some universities, for admission on a remote basis, a personal visit and communication with a supervisor are required. In others, this can be done via the Internet. For admission on a remote basis, both in the domestic and in foreign university you will need a diploma of the qualification level "master" or "specialist" in the chosen specialty.

Study abroad

Postgraduate education at a distance opens up great opportunities for studying abroad. In many universities in Europe, a domestic master's degree is accepted for admission to graduate school.

How does distance learning work?

The distance learning course for graduate students goes through the same main stages as the full-time course. As part of the course, postgraduate students must pass 3 candidate exams:

  • History and philosophy of science;
  • foreign language;
  • profile subject.

Candidate exams are preceded by lectures, which are recorded in video format for distance learning or are conducted online - the form of conducting is proposed by the teacher in accordance with his vision of the course and approved by the academic council of the faculty.

The mandatory program also includes the publication of articles in scientific journals and presentations at conferences on a topic related to the topic of the dissertation research.

An important stage before the defense is the discussion of the research at a meeting of the department (laboratory, scientific council).

This event is also transferred to the online conference mode and does not require the direct personal presence of a graduate student. Copies for review are sent in advance (at least 2 weeks) to all participants in the discussion in electronic or paper format.

Advantages and disadvantages in comparison with full-time form

The preparation of a PhD thesis on a remote basis does not provide a reprieve from the army and does not involve the state budget. The advantage of working on a dissertation remotely is that a graduate student can take courses at their own pace.

Full-time postgraduate studies are required teaching practice at least 50 hours per year, and only work with student audiences is counted. There are no such requirements for graduate students of distance learning.

Remote postgraduate study does not provide social benefits and the right to a hostel, unlike full-time. For full-time postgraduate studies, the state budget and a paid form are provided; at a distance, you can study only in paid postgraduate studies.

Advantages and disadvantages in comparison with the correspondence form

For both remote and part-time postgraduate studies, it is assumed that the future Ph.D. does not interrupt his/her labor activity and devotes time to study free from other duties. These forms of education are united by the fact that in most cases they are both paid, and not budgetary (which is a minus), but they also do not provide for mandatory teaching practice (plus).

For part-time postgraduate studies, at least 2 years of work experience in the specialty after graduation from the magistracy are required. There is no such requirement for a remote

Postgraduate students of part-time postgraduate studies are required to come to the university to attend lectures before candidate exams and discuss the dissertation research before defending. Those who are trained remotely can take advantage of the Internet for this.

The graduate student must independently, or together with the supervisor, determine the current scientific direction, choose a research topic, study the literature on this topic, obtain and process data, compare your results with those already available in science and draw conclusions. The logical conclusion of postgraduate studies is the writing and defense of a Ph.D. thesis. According to the Regulations on the procedure for awarding academic degrees, approved by Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of January 30, 2002 N 74, paragraph 9:

THESIS for the degree of Candidate of Science should be a scientific qualification work that contains a solution to a problem that is essential for the relevant branch of knowledge, or scientifically based technical, economic or technological developments that are essential for the economy or ensuring the country's defense capability.

The dissertation must be written alone, contain a set of new scientific results and provisions put forward by the author for public defense, have internal unity and testify to the author's personal contribution to science.
